Kelly Clarkson Almost Falls Trying To Meet Meryl Streep At The Golden Globes Red Carpet!
2023/04/13

Undoubtedly, the people who took home Golden Globes this year had an incredible night. Seth Meyers also had a great night with a universally well-received opening monologue. But nobody, it seems, was having as much fun as singer Kelly Clarkson who, despite being massively famous in her own field, was a little out of her element (and loving it) at the Globes. The recording star—who was on hand to present best original song—was not at all shy when it came to gushing enthusiastically over the various Hollywood luminaries. In other words, if you're still in need of a resolution for 2018, why don't you try: enjoy every day half as much as Kelly Clarkson enjoyed the Golden Globes. We should all be so lucky.

As is the case with any Golden Globe attendee, Clarkson's evening started well before the event itself, as she and designer Christian Siriano crafted a regal gold-and-black dress for the singer to wear down the red carpet.

But as challenging as the dress's full skirts made it to navigate the evening at times, Clarkson had a plan. "You can drink at this event, so I'm very excited," she told E!'s Ryan Seacrest, just before gasping and retreating at the sight of one of her heroes:  Meryl Streep.

The day before, Clarkson had recorded a video outlining why she was dying to meet Streep. "People always ask me why I'm obsessed with her. Other than the fact that she's an amazing actor, she's also an amazing singer. I feel like we could be friends," said Clarkson, who insisted she never asks any celebrities for a photo, but was determined to get one with Streep. Clarkson landed more than a photo—she got one of the most viral encounters of the entire evening.

Access tried to recapture lightning in a bottle just a few years down the carpet, when they encouraged Clarkson to have a similar encounter with  Catherine Zeta-Jones. Clarkson was no less excited, but this time the whole thing did feel a smidge forced.

Clarkson, who has, in the past, referred to her three guest appearances on S.N.L. as working in "a family place," posed cozily with former cast member Amy Poehler. But Clarkson was less familiar with comedian Steve Carell.

Nonetheless, the pair had plenty to talk about inside the ballroom, given that Carell once famouslyimprovised her name as an expletive in the very memorable 40 Year-Old Virgin waxing scene.

But for all the times Clarkson looked a bit like any one of us might look in the presence of acting luminaries (giddy, scared, giggling), when it was finally time to take the stage, the singer quickly proved why she's a luminary herself. Putting her head together with co-presenter and singer Keith Urban, Clarkson sang out the original-song category winner with just a few seconds of perfect harmony.

But there was one more hurdle that Clarkson—who certainly knows her way around a music-award ceremony or two—had to clear in order to get through this particular Golden Globes night. Nearly every woman and most men walking the red carpet had to, at one point, weigh in on the recent wave of sexual assault allegations as represented in the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. But Clarkson didn't hesitate for a second when it came to addressing this politically charged subject, advocating that the time for discussing how to be "a respectful human" is every day.

In other words, Clarkson is also advocating that we all live every minute of our lives with the same engaged, optimistic intensity she took to her trip to the Golden Globes. Honestly, there are worse guiding principles to have.
