Blake Shelton always wants to be known as a country singer, but he admits his focus is a bit split these days.
Shelton, who celebrated his first anniversary with Gwen Stefani in July, recently told ET that he has different priorities these days.
"Look, I love music, and I love 'The Voice,'" he said. "I love all the cool things I get to do with my job, but those things all take a backseat now to Gwen and the kids, and it's just a new phase of my life."
(Stefani shares three sons with her ex-husband Gavin Rossdale.)
In other words, the "God's Country" singer isn't rushing to go back on tour or release a new album of music. Shelton's last completely new collection, "Body Language," came out in the Spring of 2021. That doesn't mean fans won't hear any new music – just that it isn't soon coming packaged as an album. Shelton's new song "No Body" – and its accompanying video – is out now.
"I'm having fun putting out songs when I feel like it and luckily the record label allows me to do that," he said. "They always support it when I do it and my stupid ideas of doing a '90s country video -- they're always on board, and because of that, we have a 'God's Country' once in a while or a 'Happy Anywhere.'"
Shelton has been signed to Warner Music Nashville since the beginning of his career.
"I just go, 'Hey, I want to do this. Will you guys help me?' and they'll jump on board, and we've had some big records that way," he said. "Hopefully, this will be another one."
Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear wrote 'No Body,' which tells the story of a guy who doesn't want to be with "No Body" but the person he's with. Shelton wasn't sold the first time he heard it.
"I get excited and feel like a kid every time we release new music," Shelton said in a statement. "But this song, in particular, takes me back to the '90s when I was in high school and first moved to Nashville because it feels like what the music sounded like at that time. "
He said the hook confused him the first time I heard it and that he's hoping it's the same way for everyone else, so they "have to listen to it a bunch of times to figure it out!"
Shelton strapped on his signature mullet for the song's music video, which is also out now.
"Had to bring back the mullet just for y'all," Shelton captioned a social media post.
The video was shot in a Los Angeles-area country bar and leans into the '90s vibe, complete with line dancing and Shelton's famous era-specific cowboy hat and mullet.
"The Voice" coach will be back in Nashville in September to celebrate his 12th year as a Grand Ole Opry member. He'll play both shows on the Grand Ole Opry on Sept. 10.
